The 2014 Vieux Château Certan, one of the undisputed stars of the vintage, flies out of the glass with fragrant intensity, sharp acidity, and wonderfully sculpted fruit. The 2014 emanates class, being cool, intense, but reserved in the year’s style. Throughout, the flavors are powerful and bright. Stone fruit with dark crimson and purple hues, lavender, mint, and spice lead to a dramatic finish. The 2014 is just as amazing today as it was when it first came out of the barrel. Vieux Certan, as usual, has the uncommon capacity to bestow force without adding weight. The 2014 is an enchanted bottle. Readers who are able to locate it should take advantage of the opportunity. The proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc have been restored to their original proportions of 80 percent Merlot and 20 percent Cabernet Franc.
