For true connoisseurs and collectors

Champagne House J. Selosse undoubtedly ranks among the most highly regarded and influential grower-producers in Champagne. While large houses often focus on volume, Selosse is renowned for its small-scale, terroir-driven and exceptionally characterful champagnes — crafted for true connoisseurs and collectors.

A pioneer of terroir and craftsmanship

Founded in the 1950s by Jacques Selosse in the Grand Cru village of Avize in the Côte des Blancs, the house began as a traditional family-run champagne estate. It was his son, Anselme Selosse, who took over in 1980 and transformed the domaine into a symbol of quality and innovation.

Anselme combined:

  • Strict organic / biodynamic vineyard practices
  • Extremely low yields for maximum grape concentration
  • Individual vinification of each parcel
  • Barrel-fermented wines aged in small oak casks

This approach highlights terroir — the unique soil composition and microclimate of each vineyard — resulting in wines of remarkable depth and a strong individual identity.

Vineyards and production

Selosse owns approximately 7.5–8.3 hectares of vineyards across prestigious crus: Avize, Cramant, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Ambonnay. Most are Grand Cru sites, predominantly planted with Chardonnay, complemented by Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims.

Annual production is limited to around 50,000–60,000 bottles, making each cuvée rare and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Philosophy & style

Unlike most champagnes, which rely on neutral stainless-steel fermentation, Selosse opts for natural fermentation and ageing in oak barrels, contributing to a complex, rich and layered profile.

The style is often described as:

  • Deep and intense with oxidative nuances
  • Ripe fruit, toasted nuts, brioche and pronounced minerality
  • Greater ageing potential than standard champagnes

In addition, Selosse introduced his own interpretation of a solera system (a technique inspired by Sherry production) for iconic bottlings such as Substance, creating exceptional complexity through the blending of older and younger wines.

A legend among champagnes

The influence of Selosse extends far beyond its own cuvées. Anselme Selosse is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the modern “grower champagne” movement, shifting the focus from uniform branding to true terroir expression.

In 1994, he was named Best French Winemaker by Gault-Millau, an accolade that further cemented the estate’s legendary status.

Iconic cuvées

Among Selosse’s most celebrated wines are:

  • Initial – a refined multi-vintage Blanc de Blancs
  • Version Originale – a sustainably crafted non-vintage expression
  • Substance – a cult cuvée produced using the solera technique
  • Les Carelles & La Côte Faron – single-vineyard bottlings

Each bottle tells its own story of place, style and craftsmanship.
