The 1997 is an atypically structured, rich, powerful wine for the vintage, with hard tannin in the finish. It is ripe and medium bodied, with surprising depth as well as copious quantities of plum, cherry, currant, truffle, herb, and earth aromas and flavors. Could this be a modern-day version of the underrated 1967?
Deep, dark, ruby red color is almost opaque. The wine’s dark fruit aromas are ripe & deep but close up quickly leaving them brooding. Open, opulent, ripe red-fruit has plentiful notes of coffee & chocolate. Acid is balanced & the smooth tannic structure includes plenty of drying oak. Alcohol is a touch warming & the finish lasts pretty well. The wine is better balanced than its initial ripeness suggested. (2022)
