This superb wine was a perfect accompaniment for our Cantonese meal. The colour was that of old gold, not overly dark. The initial notes were of caramel and roasted walnuts, and with time, there was an exotic saffron spice and hints of truffle and a savoury note that developed in the glass. At more than sixty years, the apparent sweetness was balanced by incredibly fresh acidity that carried this wine to a magnificent finish. Although labelled simply Anjou, the grapes are all from Coteaux du Layon and have been influenced by botrytis, although the effect was modest in the heat of the 1959 vintage.
