A remarkably old and intriguing Vintage Port from Viuva de J.M. de Morales, bottled under the rare Silver Eagle label. At almost a century old, this is a wine that offers not only the pleasure of tasting, but also a fascinating glimpse into the history of Port.

In the glass, one would expect a deep amber colour with mahogany and tawny hues. The nose is likely to be dominated by tertiary aromas: dried fruit, raisins, figs and dates, accompanied by walnuts, caramel, tobacco, leather and hints of old wood. With time in the glass, notes of orange peel, coffee and warm spices may emerge.

On the palate, the wine is more about elegance and complexity gained through age than youthful fruit. The primary fruit character of a young Vintage Port has evolved into layers of dried fruit, nuts, earth and spice. The texture should be soft and silky, with the structure considerably gentler than that of a younger Vintage Port. A long finish may reveal raisins, walnut, cocoa and subtle spices.

The condition of the individual bottle is, of course, crucial. With a Port from 1931, the fill level, storage history, cork and provenance are almost as important as the wine itself. A perfectly preserved bottle can be extraordinarily complex and rewarding, while a poorly stored example may be tired, overly oxidative or flat.

Overall impression: a fascinating wine for lovers of mature Port and historic bottles. It may not possess the power and exuberant fruit of a young Vintage Port, but at its best it offers a beautiful journey through almost a century of wine evolution.
