The Kiedricher Grafenberg Riesling trocken GG 2014 combines the delicate and very elegant fruit of Riesling Klosterberg with the refined and precise purity of Gräfenberg phyllite terroir. Spicy and complex on the palate with high subtlety and fresh precision, these are aristocrats among dry Weil Rieslings; the length is beautiful, salty and full of tension. Exceptional purity and elegance, as well as tremendous aging potential. So much delicacy here and purity, so vital and elegant, balanced. Its length is not due to alcohol, but to acidity and salinity. Wilhelm Weil loves vintage 2014 because his wines combine the appeal of fresh vintage with ripe grapes. He cites three important advantages for his thesis that his best Turmberg, Klosterberg and Gräfenberg vineyards have performed very well this rainy year. The steepness of the vineyard protects the roots from water stress; organic farming has produced skin that is healthier and stronger than grapes; and no fertilization. “We only have small botrytis, which is great for our dry wines, but produces very small amounts of sweet wine,” says Wilhelm Weil. There is no need to be sweetened, even Riesling Estate Must have Spätlese quality, he continued. Extract levels were also very high in 2014 which is why Weil prefers 2014 vintage over 2013. “The 2014 years were between body/polar extracts and cold breeds, perfectly integrated.” As for dry wine, I agree. Although Weil’s team managed to produce all the predicate except Eiswein, vintage 2014 seems very good especially for dry wine.
