Bouzeron is a small village in the Côte Chalonnaise sub-region of Burgundy, with its own appellation for white wines made from Aligoté. The title also covers the vineyards of neighboring Chassey-le-Camp. The two communes were granted appellation status in 1998, after 20 years as a sub-division of the regional Bourgogne Aligoté title.
Bouzeron wines are typically dry in style and light-bodied, with a silky mouthfeel. They are distinctively floral on the nose, with a faint trace of vanilla. Although most local producers aim for this lighter, fresher style, it is not unknown for these wines to be barrel fermented or barrel aged.
The soils around Bouzeron are based on limestone strata laid down in the Jurassic era – much like the other communes of the Chalonnaise, as well as the Côte de Beaune, just a short distance to the north. While very much part of the Chalonnaise, Bouzeron is located only five kilometers (three miles) from the prestigious Côte de Beaune slopes of Chassagne-Montrachet.
The appellation’s vineyards occupy just over 100 hectares (247 acres). They lie on the western side of the Montagne de La Folie which is home to the Premier Cru vineyards of Rully. Bouzeron does not include any Premier Cru or Grand Cru sites.
The climate here is considered to be of continental type, with warm, dry summers and cool winters. Precipitation is relatively high over the course of the year. Rain falls mostly during summer storms, posing a threat to ripening fruit.
