The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean unfurls to reveal hints of citrus oil and crisp green apple, complemented by notions of almond paste and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, chalky and layered, this is a mineral, succulent Clos Saint-Jean that should show well young.
Thierry Pillot’s 1.2ha parcel sits next to Les Caillerets, making a tag-team of outstanding white wine terroirs. Focussed, nuanced and poised, as the domaine’s wines invariably are, this is especially praiseworthy in a vintage when Chassagne didn’t always deliver. Subtle, chalky and rigorous, it’s a wine that engages the mind as well as the palate.
