The 2020 E. Rouget Echézeaux Grand Cru has a “big”, quite ostentatious bouquet with dark cherries, crème de cassis, tinned prune and blueberries. It augurs for a top-heavy palate, though actually I find this better balanced than expected, certainly more so than the Les Beaumonts with veins of blood orange enlivening the quite persistent finish. This should age well in bottle although I would like to see more restraint on the nose.

Note: from a total of 1.06 ha with 65+ year old vines in the climats of Les Treux and Cruots with .63 ha and .43 ha, respectively; Rouget indicated that this was picked at a potential alcohol level of 16% Black color. Exceptionally ripe yet unexpectedly fresh aromas combine notes of black cherry liqueur and spice with those of poached plum and wood. The palate impression is one of opulence and unctuosity allied with surprisingly good energy on the exceptionally powerful, firm, bold and robust finale. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this incredibly concentrated effort is completely atypical but still manages to work
