The 1976 Ducru Beaucaillou appears to be in modest, decent decline when tasted blind in Bordeaux. On the nose, there are appealing, loose-knit red berry and cold black tea smells, the warmth from that summer still present and pleasant, possibly compensating for its lack of complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, with mushroom notes and a strange licorice taste! It’s similar to the magnum served at the estate in 2011, however I believe it’s a few steps further along its drinking plateau in bottle. Bottles should be consumed in the not-too-distant future, although larger formats should still be enjoyed. Tasted in April of this year. Drink till 2021.
