Les Renardesis a vineyard within the commune of Aloxe-Corton in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. It is a lieu-dit (named site) of the Corton Grand Cru appellation, for red wines from Pinot Noir. A section at the top of the property may also produce Chardonnay for the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru appellation.
The walled, 14.3 hectare (35.3 acre) site is located at the northeast end of the commune. It lies high on the eastern slopes of the Montagne de Corton hill, just below the Le Corton.
Further to the northeast it borders the commune of Ladoix-Serrigny, and more specifically Corton Le Rognet et Corton Grand Cru.
Les Renardes is characterized by pebbly, marlstone soils rich in iron oolite. These reputedly impart the rich, gamey character for which Corton Renardes wines are known.
There are various tales about the etymology of the climat’s name, which means ‘The Vixens’. Some imply that the ‘foxy’ hints in the climat’s wines were the inspiration. Some point to stories of hiding Resistance fighters forced to eat fox in the Second World War.
Others suggest that (consciously or not) its winemakers have encouraged the animal aromas in their Renardes wines to suit the name.
