Claude Taittinger was a great patron of the arts, and, as such, he began in the early 1980s to commission artwork for the bottles of some of his most exquisite wines. The highly collectible bottle was designed by Corneille, a Dutch artist known for lyrical, colorful paintings that evoke a sense of whimsy through his depictions of birds, women, and cats. According to the importers web site: “The Taittinger Collection Series bottles are released only in great vintages, from a selection of the year’s finest cuvées. The wines are made from Chardonnay mainly from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs, and Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne vineyards.”

Designed by the Senegalese Artist, Amadou Sow, it is called “Cosmic Pearls,” which represents a star-studded African night sky. There are only 7,000 units worldwide, which is fewer than in previous Collection releases. Taittinger only makes Collection series wines in the best vintages, and as 2002 was such a great year in Champagne, the 50% Chardonnay / 50% Pinot Noir juice in the bottle is sure to be fantastic.

91pts: “Bright gold with a fine bead. Smoky, powerfully scented bouquet displays lemon custard, buttery brioche and dried flowers. A spicy, focused midweight, offering juicy pear and mineral flavors and a late note of bitter lemon zest. Gains power with air and finishes with lingering pear and mineral notes. This is complex enough to drink now

The Taittinger Collection Series bottles are released only in great vintages from a selection of the year’s finest cuvées.
