Exotic flavors, minerals, coffee, black currants, and fragrant oak characterize the 1988 Mouton Rothschild. The scent is as impressive as the 1989, but the flavors aren’t quite as complex. It’s a harder, rougher, more tannic wine in the mouth than the 1989, with a medium body and exceptional maturity. The short finish hinders it from being magnificent, despite the fact that it is a superbly constructed 1988 that will endure 20-25 years. The Mouton Rothschild 1988 is similar to the 1985 Mouton Rothschild, but with a bit more tannin.
