Two of the best expressions of the 2006 vintage have undoubtedly come from Dom Pérignon. The red fruit notes have shifted to the darker end of the spectrum, with sour cherry, plum, and a reductive smokiness. Excellent mouthfeel, already silky smooth and creamy. Dense and chewy, with a beautiful fruit taste but no heaviness or clumsiness. The trademark toastiness is already present: on the mid-palate, I detect some coffee and walnut tones that are slightly forward but not totally resolved. The aftertaste is harsh, with bitterness from underdeveloped, dry extract pointing to a promising potential. Drink this from 2021 to 2036 if you can keep your hands off it.
