The 2015 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is very magnificent. This is the first year that Arione fruit has been used in the blend, therefore the 2015 is 80 percent Francia and 20 percent Arione. That symbolizes a return to Monfortino as a multi-vineyard wine, as it was primarily until 1978, when the first Monfortino from Francia was produced. The combination of sites is fantastic. I recall tasting the 2015 as a whole and noticing what the Arione piece adds, which is aromatic explosiveness, mouthfeel, and width. Complexity is added by rose petal, mint, sage, tobacco, and cedar. But more than anything else, the 2015 has blown me away with how tasty it is. Of course, the 2015 will improve over time, but its pedigree is unmistakable.
