Les Beaux Monts is a Premier Cru climat of the Vosne-Romanée appellation, in the Côte de Nuits sub region of northern Burgundy. This vineyard, like most of its neighbors on this part of the Côte d’Or, is planted entirely to Pinot Noir, making a full-bodied yet elegant wine with ripe fruit characters.

The 11.4 hectare (28.1 acre) vineyard, also sometimes written “Beaumonts”, is a patchwork straddling the commune boundaries of Flagey-Echezeaux and Vosne-Romanée (convention dictates that wines from the former are labeled as the latter) at the western end of the vineyards, on the mid-slope of the Côte d’Or hillside.

Just over 1.2 hectares of the lieu-dit “Les Beaux Monts Bas” at the lower, eastern end of the vineyard is actually classified as Grand Cru and part of the wider Echezeaux vineyard, which it also borders to the north.

At the top end of the vineyard, to the east, are the lieu-dits of “Les Hauts Beaux Monts” and “Les Beaux Monts Hauts”, a small portion of which, at the very top of the slope, is classified at village-level, or basic Vosne-Romanée. This portion makes up nearly 1.8 hectares (4.4 acres).

Another lieu-dit, at the very northeast of the wider Beaux Monts vineyard is a another village-level section called Beaux Monts Haut Rougeots. As its name implies, it sits above the Rougeots, or Les Rouges, section of the Echezeaux vineyard.

To the south lies the Premier Cru vineyard of Aux Brulees that straddles the D109 road, coming down the hill and winding its way into the village of Vosne itself.

Les Beaux Monts’ position covers both the steeper mid-slope of the Côte d’Or and the flatter, lower-lying land. Indeed, the wider Beaux Monts vineyard is itself often divided into Les Beaux Monts Hauts – roughly 3.6 hectares (8.8 acres) – and Les Beaux Monts Bas (7.8 hectares/19 acres).

The upper portion of the vineyard is generally considered a touch too cool to produce exceptional wines but still produces good Premier Cru wines. The lower part, level with Echezeaux, can be superlative.

Les Beaux Monts is one of the larger Premier Cru climats in Vosne-Romanée (and in the Côte de Nuits itself) but it is also well-situated and well-respected. Furthermore, it boasts a raft of top quality producers making wines from its vines. (Wine-searcher)
